ANSWERS TO PROBLEM SET 2

Set I

Calf 1. The B system indicates that Bull B cannot be the sire of the calf. Since the OxOI' factor must come from the dam, the sire must supply PI', which only bull A possesses.

Calf 2. Bull B is indicated as the sire as Bull A is excluded due to systems B, F-V and Z.

Calf 3. Since Dam 1 cannot be the dam of the calf (on the basis of the B system), there is no need to know the sire of the calf. However, Bull A cannot be the sire of the calf due to the F-V system and the A system. In this case the cow must have switched calves with another cow at calving. It also could be an ET calf.

Set II

Calf 1. Bull C must be the sire (D is excluded) due to the B system.

Calf 2. Both the A and B systems exclude Bull C from being the sire, thus D is indicated as the sire.

Calf 3. Either bull C or D could be the sire; it is impossible to exclude either bull based on the information given.
