Good luck as you compete to represent Florida at the 2009 Southern Regional Horse Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas. The information in this section applies to all competitions: Horse Judging, Hippology, Quiz Bowl, Individual and Team Demonstrations, and Public Speaking. Regional qualifiers are encouraged to review all of the Regional information to be familiar with what to expect in Little Rock.
The Regional Horse Show will be held at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds from July 29 - August 2**. You can enter your starting address to get driving directions here. The Hippology and Horse Bowl Contests will be on Wednesday, July 29, at the Fairgrounds. Demonstrations, Public Speaking, and Horse Judging will be on Thursday, July 30. The opening ceremony and awards presentation for all of the educational contests will be Thursday evening in the Coliseum. The horse show portion is from Thursday afternoon through Sunday, August 2.
Horse Show Participants
The 42 highest point scoring seniors will be eligible to compete at Regionals. The amount of points required to be in the top 42 varies from year to year (last year it was 16). Sign-up for Regionals will be at the State Horse Show immediately after the 7:00 p.m. awards program on Saturday night.
Qualifiers will be announced during the program, along with a list to stay nearby in case any of the 42 are not present or can not go. Typically at least 5-10 exhibitors beyond the top 42 are able to sign up as regular qualifiers. After 42 are registered, about five more exhibitors will be given alternate's packets and will complete the necessary forms for entry. However, the alternates will be on a "short notice" stand-by and are only eligible to compete if a registered participant scratches. There is a very tight turn-around time between the State show and the entry deadline for Regionals. We will mail Florida's entries on the first Wednesday following the State show (7/15), so please be sure you are able to go if you sign up and that your entry is complete. It might be difficult to get alternates substituted for those who cancel.
Exhibitors who anticipate qualifying for Regionals should take a good look at the sample entry form that will be posted at the state show (and is online here) and be prepared to complete it in its entirety on Saturday evening. A qualifier should turn in a completed form, signed by a parent/guardian, and all fees due on Saturday evening in order to compete at Regionals. If the parent/guardian will not be present for the Regionals sign-up, this online form should be signed by them ahead of time (just in case) and sent with the youth to the awards program.
**Please note that the timing of Regionals is a direct conflict with State 4-H Congress. The last day you can cancel your Congress registration and get even a partial refund is July 2. However, the State 4-H Events Office will allow same gender substitutions for Regional qualifiers until Wednesday, July 15. These substitutions apply only to those who had already registered and paid for Congress, competed in the State Horse Show, then qualified for Regionals. Youth who qualified for Regionals will still need to commit to registering for Regionals at the Saturday awards program after the show. So, before it gets to that ‘last minute’ point, everyone who has already signed up for Congress should think about what they might want to do should they qualify for Regionals.
