A unique cross-disciplinary environment:
The University of Florida ranks in the upper 10% among all state universities in the nation for undergraduate and graduate programs and is one of only a few major universities in which all major academic units are located on one campus. The AMCB is structured to take advantage of this broad intellectual environment by providing students with unique opportunities for interdisciplinary education and research relevant to Animal Biotechnology. As such, this program is in a unique position to provide training in a wide range of biological research areas and laboratory techniques.
Strong seminar series:
Participation in seminars is essential for making students well-informed and capable of critical and analytical thinking. The University of Florida has a strong and diverse array of seminar programs; the AMCB students participate fully in these programs. All students are required to attend the AMCB Seminar. Each student is required to take this seminar for credit at least once and to present a seminar on his/her research. Students are required to attend other interdisciplinary seminars as well; these include special seminars sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR) and the Interdisciplinary Reproductive Biology Seminar Series. Students also must participate in their respective home departmental seminars.
Diverse mentoring programs:
The commitment of AMCB faculty to the training and education of graduate students for competitive leadership positions in Animal Biotechnology is demonstrated by the following mentoring programs: 1) provision of financial support for students to attend and present their research findings in at least two national meetings in their respective disciplines during their graduate tenure (policy of each lab. group); 2) encouraged participation of students in teaching and teaching workshops (e.g. Focus on Teaching Workshop) and in mentoring undergraduate or pre-collegiate students in research; 3) required participation of students in seminars and courses dealing with contemporary science-related issues (e.g. ethics in science, grantsmanship; patents/trademarks/inventions); 4) weekly meetings within each laboratory group where graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are provided the opportunity to present research results and problems and to discuss recent papers related to research projects; and 5) opportunity for limited research internships within or outside the University, when appropriate, to learn new research techniques.
ICBR Education & Training Core:
The Education and Training Core is an integral component of the University of Florida Biotechnology Program. The ETCL is dedicated to the design, preparation, and teaching of current methods in molecular biology. This Core was created to promote and facilitate the use of molecular techniques in biological research. This is accomplished through short, intensive, hands-on courses.
