Objective:
The purpose of this course is to introduce the knowledge, horseback and management skills required for proper daily horse care and conditioning. This course is designed for those seeking employment requiring basic horse care skills and for novice horse owners.
Schedule:
This class will meet Tuesday and Thursday, periods 6&7 (12:50-2:45pm) at the Horse Teaching Unit.
1/9- Tour of unit, basic behavior, safety around the horse.
1/11- Catching, leading, tying (learn knots), basic grooming.
1/16- Handling young horses.
1/18- Daily horse care management: feeding, stall cleaning, etc.
1/23- Horse health.
1/25- Horse Judging. "Quiz"
1/30- Hoof trimming and evaluation of a proper shoeing job.
2/1- " "
2/6- Restraint and handling techniques for vet , farrier visits, clipping etc.
2/8- Ageing by teeth.
2/13- Trailer loading, hauling and safety.

2/20- Identification and parts of tack, cleaning and storage of tack.
2/22- Recognition and evaluation of various styles of riding: Hunt, Saddle, Stockseat, Dressage.
2/27- Proper tacking up procedure.
3/1- Longeing of a horse, use of line and longe whip. "Quiz"

Grading:
Participation and progress 40 pts.
4 10-point quizzes (you may drop your lowest score). No Makeups 40 pts.
Each quiz will cover material from hand-outs given in the previous classes.
2 10-point reports on articles or videos regarding some aspect of
"Horsemanship" 20 pts.
Total 100 pts.
A = 90+, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 60-69, E = 59-
