Extension/Outreach

Extension is the third arm of the land grant system provided by the Smith-Lever Act in 1914. This Act established the Cooperative Extension Service and specified that the service would be associated with a land grant college. The Act also stipulated that Federal funds be matched with local funds. Florida Cooperative Extension is a partnership between UF/IFAS, United States Department of Agriculture, and county governments in Florida to provide scientific knowledge and expertise to the public through non-resident educational programs. Operating as part of IFAS, Extension serves each of the state's sixty-seven counties by providing information and conducting educational programs on various issues.

Animal Sciences Department faculty work closely with industry groups including several livestock associations, Florida Farm Bureau, and others to develop educational programs for their members. Schools, institutes, demonstrations, short courses, and field days are some of the activities resulting from the programs. Extension activities are viewed as a responsibility of the entire department, and faculty, other than those with extension appointments, contribute to these activities. Several groups of county faculty such as the South Florida Beef Forage Program, Central Florida Livestock Agents Group, and the Northeast Florida Beef & Forage Group, plan programs for their region and coordinate multi-county livestock field research and demonstration projects, supported by both departmental and Research and Education Center faculty. Extension faculty in the department and centers provide both support and leadership to youth livestock projects and conduct statewide activities for 4-H and FFA youth.

Classes and Programs

  • Food Safety Modernization Act, Preventive Controls for Animal Food (FSMA)

The Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-based Preventive Controls for Animal Food regulation (referred to as the Preventive Controls for Animal Food regulation) is intended to ensure safe manufacturing/processing, packing, and holding of food products for animal consumption in the United States. The regulation requires that certain activities be completed by a “preventive controls qualified individual”. This course, developed by FSPCA, is the “standardized curriculum” recognized by the FDA; successfully completing this course is one way to meet the requirements for a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual.

  • Corn Silage and Forage Field Day

The Corn Silage and Forage Field Day is an event organized by UF and UGA Tifton Forage teams focusing on silage production. Each year, the field day brings together dairy producers, beef producers, forage growers, allied forage industries, and Extension faculty to explore new materials and technologies for corn and sorghum production. The field day includes tours of the hybrid trials, educational talks on silage production, and a trade show connecting producers and industry partners. The field days is normally hosted at the end of May or the beginning of June in Florida and Georgia, in alternate years.

  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)

This program is designed to provide the attendees with a working knowledge of HACCP and its supporting programs. The information will be presented by certified instructors in short, concise lectures. In addition, within small working groups, the attendees will actually develop a HACCP plan and present it to the class for discussion and critique. Upon successful completion of the course, the attendee will be registered with the International HACCP Alliance and recognized as completing a HACCP training program.

  • Livestock Education and Certification for Agriculture Law Enforcement (LECALE)

The objective of the Livestock Education and Certification for Agriculture Law Enforcement (LECALE) program is to provide law enforcement and state attorney personnel with rigorous and relevant training curriculum regarding generally accepted livestock production practices, skills to discern acceptable animal well-being, and the ability to apply acquired knowledge and skills in the field and during litigation proceedings. Specific learning objectives include basic animal husbandry, identification, behavior, and handling, nutrition, pastures, disease and biosecurity, euthanasia, body condition scoring, and live animal evaluations.

  • Know Your Heifer - Optimizing Replacement Beef Heifer Development

The Know Your Heifer Program is an extension service to beef producers. In the 2020-2021 breeding season, we enrolled over 2,000 heifers in more than 20 beef operations across Florida. We confirmed that half of all immature heifers were still open in the end of the breeding season. Participation in the program enabled producers to make cost-effective management decisions, such as culling or delaying breeding, based on the evaluation of heifers. Additionally, we established a statewide system to collect, summarize and compare information on the reproductive potential and performance of replacement beef heifers. Beef operations were ranked and producers could see how they measured up.

  • Florida International Dairy Academy (FIDA)

The Florida International Dairy Academy (FIDA) is tailored to advance the knowledge of global dairy herd management and production. Dairy production is a complex system, the nine courses offered are developed to take you to the forefront of practical and scientific knowledge in dairy production. The program prepares students for a technology-driven career applied to progressive dairy farms.
