Graduate Students

The Department of Animal Sciences offers Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis) and Doctor of Philosophy programs. Each program is designed to provide advanced training beyond the baccalaureate degree. Upon completion, our students will be trained to conduct research, teach, and carry out extension activities in animal agriculture across the major animal species: beef, dairy, poultry, swine, and equine.

Degrees and Tracks

  • Master of Science

Requirements for the M.S. include a research project with a minimum of 30 credit hours of which six are research credits (ANS 6971).

Most students complete their master's studies in two and a half years. However, the duration of the program depends on how rapidly progress is made on the project.

Each student develops a degree plan that must be approved by their supervisory committee with final approval from the graduate coordinator.

    More Information

See: Graduate Courses for a complete listing of courses in the department.

Further information on graduate programs and regulations are in the University of Florida Graduate Catalog and Graduate School Website.

  • Master of Science (non-thesis)

The M.S. (n-t) is our non-thesis option. It is primarily designed for those students who are seeking opportunities in a field where research is not required for employment.

A minimum of 32 credits is required to complete this degree, and can usually be finished in one year (including the summer semesters).

Each student develops a degree plan that must be approved by the student's supervisory committee with final approval from the graduate coordinator.

    More Information

See: Graduate Courses for a complete listing of courses in the department.

Further information on graduate programs and regulations appear in the University of Florida Graduate Catalog and Graduate School Web site.

  • Doctor of Philosophy

Requirements for the Ph.D. are more flexible and varied than those of other degrees. The general requirement is that the program be unified with clear objectives, and approved by the student's supervisory committee.

The Ph.D. program represents independent mastery of a field of knowledge and the successful pursuit of an independent research program.

A total of 90 credits and a dissertation are required to complete this degree.

    More Information

See: Graduate Courses for a complete listing of courses in the department.

Further information on graduate programs and regulations appear in the University of Florida Graduate Catalog and Graduate School Web site.
