Dr. Zongliang (Carl) Jiang

Associate Professor

Dr. Jiang received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in 2015, was a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale School of Medicine, and then from 2017-2022, he worked as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Doyle Chambers Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Animal Sciences, IFAS, University of Florida. Dr. Jiang conducts research in the areas of reproductive biology with an emphasis on early embryonic and placental trophoblast development, stem cells, and development and application of assisted reproductive technologies in livestock species.

Programs

  • Research

Dr. Jiang’s laboratory conducts basic and applied research with a direct impact on animal and human reproductive health. The main research interests at UF include:

    • Molecular mechanisms regulating early embryo development: 1) characterization of functional genome and epigenome during early embryo development, 2) identification of molecular drivers that control embryonic genome activation and early lineage differentiation, and 3) understanding the embryonic and extra-embryonic cell-cell communication during pre- and peri-implantation development.
    • Epigenetic mechanisms regulating placental trophoblast differentiation and function, and diseases of pregnancy. We conduct a systematic, comparative study on trophoblasts from mice and bovine embryos, as well as human trophoblast stem cell disease models, focusing on the mechanisms specific and regulate the cell lineages in the placenta.
    • Development of stem cells for livestock reproductive applications.
