Sub-tropical Management

Beef production in tropical and subtropical regions of the planet is crucial to meet the rising global beef demand. Beef cattle with Bos indicus influence predominate in these regions due to their greater thermotolerance and adaptability to hot and humid environments compared to Bos taurus breeds. However, under similar management, Bos indicus and Bos taurus may display different reproductive physiology, nutrient requirements, social behavior, digestive system, and body composition. Our distinct group of faculty members, located at the Department of Animal Science in Gainesville and at Research and Education Centers in Marianna and Ona, are committed to developing basic and applied research designed to optimize beef and dairy cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions. More specifically, our research groups focus on a wide variety of subtopics including behavior, thermoregulation, and genetic selection, as well as specific nutritional, management, and reproductive strategies for beef and dairy cattle managed under elevated heat and humidity conditions.
